See where we’ve been — People’s Journey: Wood

People's Kitchen Collective

PKC at CAAMFest 2024

PKC’s documentary film, EARTH SEED: A People’s Journey of Radical Hospitality, debuts at CAAMFest 2024.

The Film

A timely inquiry, if not its own urgent prayer, “What is the future of survival?” EARTH SEED: A People’s Journey of Radical Hospitality is a pilgrimage through California from present-day Los Angeles to the Mendocino Woodlands. Lifting up the people and places who are forging models for survival and a collective future. Octavia Butler’s Parables series, the living legacies of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense, and the diaspora of the global south, serve as canonical wisdom for the frontlines of activists of color, artists, educators, farmers, youth, and elders who are dreaming, reimagining, and building survival practices for tomorrow.

2023 Castanea Fellow Hải Võ

Eeeeeee! We are beyond excited for the new #castaneafellows including & especially PKC’s @nuocmamcham ❤️ Congratulations to all & a special squeal for Carmen Cortez of @tierras.milperas 🌱#NeilThapar 🌱@mellemusic of @polospantryla & 🌱@navinamoon of @healfoodalliance 😍

Repost from @castaneafellowship

🎉👏🏾 💐 Please give a warm welcome to the newest Castanea Fellows! Chosen from among hundreds of applicants nationwide, these 24 leaders are boldly transforming the way we eat, fish and farm toward justice. Tap the link in our bio to learn more about them.

This year’s fellows include farmers, farmworkers and chefs; entrepreneurs, activists and community organizers; storytellers, artists and ancestral wisdom keepers. They hail from more than 14 states, tribes and territories, and embody the power of the Black, Brown, Asian, Indigenous, immigrant and queer experience.

Castanea Fellows usher in fresh new ideas at a time when America’s food system is in desperate need for transformation:

💰 2023 has seen a handful of large corporations reap enormous profits while the average household grocery bill skyrockets and food workers are exploited.

👩🏿‍🌾 Racist policies and predatory lending have robbed farmers of color of more than $300 billion in land and wealth, and the average producer today must take a second off-farm job just to make ends meet.

🥬 Meanwhile, in neighborhoods across the country, communities are working harder than ever to be able to grow and access food that is healthful and culturally resonant.

MoAD's new Chef in Residence: Jocelyn Jackson

Biggest 🌻 brightest 🌻 congratulations to PKC co-founder #JocelynJackson - new chef in residence at @moadsf - a position previously held and shaped by PKC fam @bryantterry - we are so excited 🥬 ❤️✊🏽.

MUSEUM OF THE AFRICAN DIASPORA (MoAD) is pleased to announce that Jocelyn Jackson will serve as our new CHEF-IN-RESIDENCE starting this January 2023.

Founder of JUSTUS Kitchen (@justuskitchen) and co-founder of People’s Kitchen Collective (@peopleskitchencollective), the award-winning, Oakland-based chef, artist, teacher, and activist brings her passion and commitment to health, wellness, and food justice in the Black community to MoAD’s signature Chef-in-Residence program, an initiative launched and shaped by James Beard Award-winning chef and author Bryant Terry (@bryantterry) who has served in the role since 2015.

Over the next two years, Jackson will be responsible for creating innovative public programs that celebrate the confluence of food, farming, health, activism, art, culture, and the African Diaspora.

"As a chef activist that works at the intersection of food, arts, and social justice, my focus is to co-create healing food experiences that support our collective liberation,” says Jackson. “This dynamic collaboration with MoAD as Chef-In-Residence provides an incredible platform for amplifying the voices and actions of people in our beloved diaspora community who are committed to the powerful role culture plays in our pathways to freedom and inspiration.

Chef-in-Residence is sponsored by Kaiser Permanente. @kpthrive
